  • All-new Proton X50 sales start strongly with 999 units delivered in first week of sales

Subang Jaya, 11 August 2025 – PROTON has started the second half of the year strongly as Malaysian car sales rebounded following a lacklustre performance in June. Group sales for the company ended the month at 13,518 units, an increase of 22.1% over the previous month to push Year-To-Date (YTD) sales to 85,674 units for the first seven months of the year and placing it second in the overall national sales rankings.

Market share for the month is estimated to at 19.2% with a current YTD market share figure of 19.3%. This is an increase of 0.6% compared to the whole of 2024, which closed at 18.7% for the full year when Malaysian car sales achieved a new record high. Total Industry Volume (TIV) for July is estimated to have closed at 70,545 units, an increase of 28.7% over June and the second highest monthly sales figure for 2025.

Three Proton models finish on top in their segments led by new Proton X50

Launched on 24 July, the all-new Proton X50 was an important volume growth driver for the company last month. With 999 units delivered over the final seven days of the month it ended July with total sales exceeding 2,000 units for the third time in 2025 and closing at 2,068 units.

Boasting a new exterior design, upgraded interior, new intelligent features, and benefiting from a marketing campaign targeting more youthful buyers, the B-segment SUV market leader has captured a lot of attention on social media and in showrooms. With total production volume forecast to hit 5,000 units by the end of this month and total bookings closing in on five digits, an even better sales figure is expected in August.

Meanwhile, the Proton X90 and Proton S70 continued their steady sales performance to lead the D-segment SUV and C-segment sedan classes. The former tacked on a further 229 units to its volume in 2025 while the latter continues to outperform expectations with another 1,404 units sold in July to bring its combined YTD volume to 10,750 units.

Proton Saga has best sales month of 2025 as Proton X70 sales growth hits 51.7%

Aside from the new Proton X50, the other Proton model to attract considerable social media attention recently is the Proton Saga, a model that celebrated its 40th anniversary on 9 July this year. Demand for the white variant of the Hot Wheels collectible, a follow up to the original red, has been strong with fans struggling to find units at retail outlets nationwide.

A similar scenario played out in Proton showrooms in July as 6,638 units of Proton Saga were sold in July, by far the best result for the model in 2025. The achievement has pushed YTD sales to 38,345 units this year, proving once again the combination of design, features, safety, and value deliver a product A-segment sedan customers are looking for.

The Proton model with the best sales growth this year is the Proton X70. Despite a slew of new competitors, the C-segment SUV has a YTD sales growth figure of 51.7% after 617 units were added in July to bring YTD sales to 4,971 units. The final two ICE model, the Proton Persona and Proton Iriz added 1,499 units, its best performance in 2025, and 329 units in July respectively.

After a slow month in June, sales of Proton models grew by nearly 2,500 units or 22.1% in July, to give the company a great start to the second half of 2025. “The introduction of the all-new Proton X50 has given the entire range an attention boost and PROTON intends to keep the upward momentum going with more new model introductions and a technology showcase at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2025 in the last five months of the year,” said Zhang Qiang, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.

Export sales now 44.1% ahead of 2024, Proton e.MAS 7 sales close in on 5,000 units

PROTON’s intention to sharpen its focus on export sales were sign posted by the recent formation of Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd (PICSB). Total YTD export sales now stand at 2,258 units, 44.1% more than in 2024 with the Proton X50 overtaking the Proton Saga as the most popular export model.

Third on the list of export models is the Proton e.MAS 7 and with another 20 units exported in July, its YTD export volume now stands at 270 units. More importantly, July saw another 706 units (including exports) being sold to bring its YTD total sales to 4,959 units, comfortably placing the model as the most popular EV offering in the country.

"The success of the Proton e.MAS 7 has exceeded expectations and proves the product as well as the company’s strategy to focus on brand building, charging infrastructure and the opening are correct for Malaysian EV buyers. With the upcoming Proton e.MAS 5 adding a second EV model to our portfolio and growing interest from overseas markets, the expectation is for EV and export sales to grow their contribution to overall sales numbers over the coming months and years,” added Zhang Qiang.
